We tend to look for the new hot thing in business and believe that is where we find growth. That might be true for a minority of businesses but for the majority the future growth of a business is looking at the past. Meaning what have not changed and what have been around for a long time. Where this way of thinking can be used as a framework for taking strategic decisions inside a business, I will use it to celebrate all the boring business that nobody talks about, the ones that have not changed for years and have just served their market and build a profitable business. What characterize these businesses are that they have a simple but needed business model, have not innovated much, exist in an industry with low competition and have been around for a long time. I call these business New Zealand businesses. These businesses have no fancy technology, large data set-up or start-up awards on their shelves. Somehow they have just build a profitable business without using the new hot thing we all think is a necessity to build a sustainable business.
